# Diary Of A Madman - Author: Nikolai Gogol - Genre: #### Kindle Highlights #### Notes --- The story Diary Of A Madman is about a office worker, Axenty, that appears to well be going mad. He has a job in a government office and doesn't like what he does or his coworkers. He journals in his diary how much better he is than most all of them & fantasizes of the office directors daughter. One day he notices that animals are talking, in particular one is a dog that he says writes letters to a friend of the directors daughter. He goes to the friend of the directors daughter, and steals letters from the dog to the shock and dismay of the friend. The dog, Medji, describes its life in care of the directors household and the events that occur within. It writes of its own life experiences such as it having multiple dog suitors seeking its affection while it could care less but all for one of them. It also describes that the daughter is looking to be engaged by an officer & also describes Axenty very disparaging which angers him. He feels that this is a ruse setup by his leadership out of jealousy. However despite this he starts to think that he is the king of Spain. He begins referencing himself as such & stops actively going to work until he is called back to do so three weeks later. Unfortunately for Axenty he is admitted against his will into an insane asylum due to him thinking he is the king of Spain. However for him, he thinks this is just some initiation for his role of becoming a monarch. The reality is he's being rather tortured for making this claim and ends up remaining within the asylum still believing themselves to be the ruler of Spain. --- The Nose is a story about a man's nose that goes missing. Initially it is found in a roll of a barber of the main character. His wife is freaked out and curses him to remove it from their home before she reports him to the police. The barber goes off to do so and despite them trying to do so stealthily is approached by the police when he drops the nose off a bridge. From there, we're introduced to the mans whoms nose that has gone missing from his face. Not only does it go missing but it goes on to somewhat live a life of its own. The man goes to try to find his nose to reattach it to his face. The nose however has its own ideas and goes to live a little bit on its own. It is a major(?) and for a short while leads a rather interesting life. For a short while it does its own thing, to the dismay of its human and eventually is caught to be returned to its human. Even after seeking help from a doctor the humans nose can't be reattached using surgery.
